In this project we decided to work on Malaysian Cultures. We decided to do so because we figured out that it would be much easier to do data collection in the next part of this project.
The elements that we decided to focus on in Malaysian culture are; Wayang Kulit, Kuda Kepang and Orang Asli.

Below is we divided each and everyone's work accordingly where two members of the team will be focusing on one subculture.
Me and Edwin focused on Wayang Kulit.

Below is a link where we did the research for the Wayang Kulit:

After collecting some information about Wayang Kulit, we started on the sketch.

Initial Sketch:

Here is a picture of the ongoing process

Final Outcome:

This is the final sketch of the wayang kulit. It shows a character drowning depicting the irony of this traditional art which is slowly extinguishing.

DATA COLLECTION:

After our first presentation, we received some feedbacks where we all collectively agreed to choose Wayang Kulit as the final project.

We (Me, Sofia and Nida) came across a talented artist's work in Ilham Gallery. Her name is Sharon Chin.
She worked on Wayang Kulit in a much simplified way.

We proceeded to contact her and hold an online meeting where we discussed about her inspiration of the project.
Here are some information that we collected from her:

She did not focus on the traditional designs of the wayang kulit

Book ref: creatures of kingdom, she got inspired by the creatures illustrated on the pages

Method use for artwork: block printing (carving on lino)

Imperfection doesnt really affect the outcome.

Her understanding of wayang: very vague, focused on the idea.

Today’s era: dark places are very rare to find, bc of electricity and everywhere is always light up, before darkness would gather people around to play the wayang kulit.  (Port dickson)

The lightsource she used was a refinery which is on 24/7

Making of the wayang: she used materials readily available at home, reusing etc, like barbecue sticks… which makes it sustainable
FINAL PROJECT: VISUAL OUTCOME

For the final project we collectively agreed to work on an interactive card where the information about the Wayang Kulit is included.
Edwin, Derin and Adifa worked on the designes and the rest of us worked on some of the content and the making of the interactive booklet.
We decided to make a mini booklet inside the card where the pages can be flipped. And on the right side I came up with the idea of waterfall cards to make it more interesting.

Below are some pictures of the interactive card:
